More than any other platform, ergonomics and usability are critical for handheld computers

The users of handlheld applications are often frontline field operatives, with little tolerance for  laborious interfaces. Generic, configurable application-development systems often make too many compromises, or can't be configured to the degree required. An application rejected by its users is a waste of money and opportunity.

When designing applications for hand-held computers, it is important to walk the end-users through the prototype early in development. If appropriate, they should be wearing PPE in full sunlight if that is how the application will be used. The design of handheld software is impacted by whether the user needs to take gloves off, needs to change hands to access some sampling equipment. The whole task must be considered - not just the software interface
